A new clinical trial is underway to examine
the effectiveness of a 6-week specific rehabilitation program blending
education and exercises on walking capacity in those who have
lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Vancouver Disc Centers knows
these Vancouver spinal pain conditions quite well…and offers
a relieving treatment plan of Cox® Technic spinal manipulation and mobilization
with exercise!
EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS TESTED
The aim of this described study is to investigate
whether adding an exercise program to an educational
program might enhance walking capacity in those who experience lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Being a
randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 participants will be randomly allocated to either the intervention or control
group. The intervention group
will receive an educational program plus an exercise
program, while the control group will only get the educational
program. The main outcome measure is walking capacity, while the
secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of
life. (1) Vancouver Disc Centers knows our Vancouver spinal stenosis patients are
very concerned about these outcomes!
LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH NEUROGENIC CLAUDICATION
Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a condition that produces narrowing of the spinal canal in
the lower back region, resulting in pressure on the nerves. This can result in pain,
numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In severe
cases, it can also cause difficulty walking.
The condition is most common in people over the age of 50. These are just the folks in
Vancouver who need to keep (or at least begin) exercising!
THE EXERCISES
The specific exercises that will be directed
in this study are made to improve
walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles around
the spine. The hope is that by performing these exercises regularly, patients will have less pain
and disability and have an improved quality of
life.
THE CONTROL GROUP
The control group in this trial will only get
an educational program about their condition and how to take
care of it. While education is important, it is not usually
enough on its own to deliver significant relief from symptoms. That's why adding exercise is
so important. It involves the back
pain patient in his or her relief! Listen to this PODCAST
with Dr. Michael McMurray on The Back Doctors Podcast with
Dr. Michael Johnson as he describes The
Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management for lumbar spinal stenosis.
