Pain causes us to be a bit self-centered instead
of life-centered which is perfectly logical and logically
global. People around the world suffer
with pain, back pain, neck pain, musculoskeletal pain, a great deal
of which is spine-centered. Fortunately, Vancouver chiropractic
care is locally available to help contain as well
as alleviate spine-related pain.
GLOBAL IMPACT OF SPINE AND MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN CONDITIONS
Data from a worldwide study that monitored
spine pain (neck pain and low back pain) patients from 1990 to
2019 found that the “years lived with disabilities,” incidence,
and prevalence of both spine issues increased significantly.
Globally, neck pain and low back pain were recorded as
burdening public health significantly, especially
as people age, being most problematic in middle age and older. Data also suggested that
these two conditions were more common in women and middle-aged
groups and more frequent in higher socioeconomic indexed
countries. (1) Beyond low back pain, neck
pain, rheumatoid arthritis, or osteoarthritis, the same Global Burden of Disease
Study 2019 reported that “other musculoskeletal
disorders” increased by 123.4% from 221 million to 494 million
people from 1990 to 2019. With over 150 different conditions impacting
bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and the spine under the umbrella of
“other musculoskeletal disorders,” health loss including
death and disability due to musculoskeletal disorders is expected
to keep growing. From 2020 to 2050, it is estimated
to increase by 115% to 1060 million cases. More women are impacted
by 47.4% than men. The prevalence of these disorders peaked
between 65 and 69 years of age for both men and women. (2) We at
Vancouver Disc Centers take care of all sorts of spine related musculoskeletal
disorders as well as back pain and
neck pain. Studies like these motivate us to stay current with spine research to help you, our Vancouver
chiropractic patient, in the best possible way.
UNDERSTANDING STANDING AND BACK PAIN
Neck pain and back pain are definitely
two of our most common painful spinal conditions at Vancouver Disc Centers…and
standing is a daily requisite! Everyone’s spine is a little
different. How we each stand is a bit different…and that matters!
A new study found that greater variations in lumbar
lordosis (spinal curvature) like upright standing posture in a
little more extension or more noticeable curve
like kyphosis may well affect musculoskeletal reaction
as far as spinal loading and trunk muscle force. (3) We encourage thinking about good posture which can beneficially
influence experiencinggood posture which includes standing up
straight.
UNDERSTANDING SITTING AND BACK PAIN
And sitting is another daily activity
that we all do often without a second thought (until pain forces
us think about it constantly!). In a recent study,
researchers found that unsupported sitting increased
intradiscal pressure by about 30% in comparison to upright
standing. Intradiscal pressures were greater for sitting than
standing when back angles were less than 20° and higher for
standing than sitting when the angles were more than 20°.
Knowing about spinal responses like these
are critical in the world of occupational health where lumbar
musculoskeletal disorders are a big problem. (4) Your
